Comments

Austrian Notgeld at its most regional — this 20 Heller note was issued by the market town of Spitz on the Danube during the acute small-change shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The Wachau valley municipalities were among the more prolific Notgeld issuers, partly from necessity and partly because the collectibles trade had already made local emergency money a minor revenue source by 1920.

The Schwallenbach designation identifies a specific hamlet within the Spitz administrative area, an unusual level of geographic granularity even for Austrian municipal issues.
