Obverse description The obverse is printed in olive-green and brown tones, divided into two distinct panels. The left panel carries the denomination inscription in Gothic blackletter script with the numeral '20' in a dark box, together with the validity clause 'Giltig bis 30. September 1920'. The right panel occupies the larger portion of the note and presents a finely executed landscape vignette in a woodcut or etching style, illustrating Schloss Ranna-Mühldorf perched atop a rocky hillside amid trees and shrubs, with figures visible in the foreground. A bold Gothic header reading 'Wachauer Notgeld' spans the top of the note, and the caption 'Schloss Ranna-Mühldorf' appears in a banner along the lower border.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in black on plain paper within a dotted rectangular border. The heading 'WACHAUER NOTGELD.' is centred at the top flanked on each side by the numeral '20'. Below, a block of text in uppercase letterpress sets out the legal guarantee of the Marktgemeinde Spitz a/D, pledging all movable and immovable assets for the note's acceptance as payment until 30 September 1920 and its redemption at the municipal cashier between 15 and 30 September 1920. Three signature lines are printed for the Vizebürgermeister, Bürgermeister, and 1. Geschäftsführender Gemeinderat, each bearing a manuscript signature, with the anti-counterfeiting warning 'NACHAHMUNG WIRD BESTRAFT.' printed between the legal text and the signature block.

Comments

One of the more coherent Notgeld series to come out of the Wachau, this 20 Heller was part of a set issued by Spitz an der Donau in 1920 as small-denomination emergency currency continued to fill the void left by the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monetary system. Local artist Rudolf Weber designed the series specifically for Spitz, with engraving handled by Eduard Sieger — an unusually professional production pipeline for a village-level issue.

The Ranna-Mühldorf subtitle identifies the specific locality referenced on this note within the broader Wachau series, a cataloging distinction that matters for completists: the Jaksch/Pick reference JJPR1122.07IIa distinguishes multiple sub-types, and collectors frequently conflate them.
