Obverse description Green-toned notgeld with a central landscape vignette in letterpress, showing the village of Mitter Arnsdorf with a church steeple and riverside scenery set against rolling hills of the Wachau valley. The denomination '20' appears in bold numerals at the upper left and upper right corners, with 'HELLER' inscribed across the top in a banner cartouche. Ornamental vine and scroll motifs in the side margins frame the composition, and a ribbon scroll below the vignette reads 'Mitten Arnsdorf', with 'Wachauer Notgeld' in large decorative Gothic lettering across the lower portion.

Comments

The Wachau notgeld series issued by Spitz an der Donau belongs to a wave of Austrian municipal emergency currency printed in the early 1920s to address the chronic small-coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. This particular piece, designating Mitter Arnsdorf as its locality, was one of several denominations printed by Eduard Tomschik in Krems — a professor who both designed and produced the series, giving it an unusually unified artistic hand for municipal notgeld.

Tomschik's local press connection made the Wachau issues regionally specific in a way that distinguishes them from the mass-produced notgeld churned out by Vienna commercial printers for dozens of municipalities simultaneously.
