Vorderstoder is a small alpine commune in Upper Austria with a population that barely reached four figures in 1920. That such a settlement was issuing its own emergency paper money is less surprising than it sounds — Austrian Notgeld production at the municipal level was by then an established response to the chronic small-coin shortage that had plagued the former Habsburg lands since the war years. Hundreds of communes did the same, some driven by genuine need, others by the emerging collector trade that was already monetizing the phenomenon.
The Jaksc catalog suffix "c" indicates this is the third color or print variant within the 20 Heller denomination for this issue — minor variations that matter more to specialist collectors than they ever did to anyone spending one in a village shop.
