Tumeltsham is a village in Upper Austria — population then, as now, in the low hundreds. This note was issued as part of the broader Notgeld phenomenon that swept Austrian municipalities after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small denominations effectively unavailable. Local authorities filled the gap themselves, with varying degrees of official sanction and even less standardization.
The Bürgermeister and his deputy signed these personally, which in a settlement this small meant the issuing authority and the people handing them across a counter were likely the same individuals.
