Comments

Tulln's 20 Heller notgeld from 1920 belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal emergency money issued after the First World War, when coin shortages left small denominations effectively unavailable throughout the country. Stadtgemeinde Tulln — a small town on the Danube west of Vienna — was among hundreds of Austrian municipalities that printed their own low-denomination scrip under the legal framework that briefly permitted such issues before the national currency stabilization efforts curtailed them.

These small-town notgeld pieces were typically produced in very short runs by local printers with limited means, and redemption was often poorly administered. Many were never presented for exchange.
