Four lines of Gothic-script verse by Goethe are printed in red at the top of the note. Below the central vignette, a legal text in German records the municipal council resolution of 6 April 1920, specifying the total issue of 56,000 Kronen and the redemption period from 1 to 31 December 1920. |

Steyregg is a small market town on the Danube just east of Linz, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metal coinage following the postwar economic collapse. The Austrian state simply could not produce enough fractional currency to meet everyday needs, so local authorities filled the gap themselves, typically in runs modest enough that survival rates vary considerably by issuing town.
Steyregg's emissions are among the less-documented Upper Austrian Notgeld issues, making precise print-run figures difficult to confirm.
