| Opmerkingen |
Stein an der Donau, now merged with Krems, issued this Heller notgeld in 1920 as the chronic coin shortage that plagued Austria in the immediate postwar years showed no sign of easing. Municipal and local authorities across Lower Austria were effectively left to solve the small-denomination problem themselves, and the result was an explosion of locally printed emergency issues that varied wildly in quality and staying power.
J. Faber in nearby Krems handled the printing — a logical choice given the proximity and the modest production run these small-town issues required. Many Austrian notgeld of this period were cancelled and redeemed within months once federal coinage stabilized in the early 1920s.
