Sankt Willibald is a village in the Schärding district of Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly small Austrian municipalities, it issued Notgeld during the postwar currency chaos of 1920 — a period when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation due to wartime metal requisitioning and rampant hoarding. These local emergency issues were authorized at the municipal level, which is why the Gemeindevorsteung rather than any banking authority appears as issuer.
