Austrian Notgeld of this type was produced in enormous quantities between 1919 and 1921, when the postwar coin shortage left municipalities across Upper Austria issuing their own emergency fractions. St. Martin im Mühlkreis, a small market commune in the Mühlviertel region north of Linz, was one of hundreds of Gemeinden that contracted local printers for small runs — quantities were rarely documented, which makes precise scarcity assessments difficult. The Hammer signature almost certainly indicates a local official rather than a printer or engraver.
