| Opschrift keerzijde | Krieg und Not Es uns gebot. Zur Linderung der Kleingeldnot gibt die Gemeinde Sankt Johann am Wimberg in Oberösterreich laut Sitzungsbeschluß vom 5. Mai 1920 für 50.000 Kronen Gutscheine aus. Diese sind unverzinslich und haftet die Gemeinde mit einer eigenen Deckungsrücklage. Die Einlösung erfolgt vier Wochen nach Bekanntgabe des Einlösungstermines in gesetzlichem Bargelde beim Gemeindeamte St. Johann a. W. St. Johann am Wimberg, am 5. Mai 1920. Der Bürgermeister: Josef Wolferstorfer. Die Nachmachung dieses Scheines wird gesetzlich bestraft. |

Sankt Johann am Wimberg is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal emergency currency — Notgeld — issued between 1919 and 1921 when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small communities without adequate coinage for everyday transactions. Thousands of Austrian and German municipalities printed their own small-denomination paper, and the Upper Austrian examples are among the more modestly produced, typically lacking the elaborate folk-art designs that made some Tyrolean and Styrian issues collector favorites.
