Klemens Brosch was a Linz-born artist who died by suicide in 1925 at thirty-one, leaving behind a body of work now considered among the most distinctive in early twentieth-century Austrian graphic art. His Notgeld commissions — small-town emergency currency issued during the postwar paper money shortage — are among the most collectible of the entire Austrian series precisely because his draughtsmanship was genuinely exceptional rather than decoratively adequate.
Sankt Georgen an der Gusen was a modest market town, and the Brosch connection is the reason this note exists in any serious collection at all.
