Schörfling am Attersee is a small market town on the western shore of the Attersee in Upper Austria. This 20 Heller note is a Notgeld issue — one of thousands of emergency municipal notes printed across Austria between roughly 1919 and 1921, when chronic small-coin shortages following the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system forced even minor communities to produce their own fractional currency. The signature of Alois Iagl, presumably the Bürgermeister or a senior municipal official at the time, gives the note its local authorization.
