Schönau im Mühlkreis is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921. The postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local governments scrambling to issue their own small-denomination emergency currency — not because they had monetary authority, but because there was simply nothing else to spend at the village level. Coins had vanished from circulation almost entirely.

The JPR0967a series from Schönau is among the more obscure Upper Austrian Notgeld issues, with very limited documentation of print runs or the local printer involved.
