20 Heller Schönau an der Triesting

Schönau an der Triesting is a small market town in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, it resorted to issuing its own emergency small change — Notgeld — following the severe coin shortage that gripped the former Habsburg territories in the aftermath of the First World War. The Heller denominations were particularly practical: by 1920, the Austrian crown had inflated enough that 20 Heller was genuinely useful in daily transactions, but metal coinage at that level had largely vanished from circulation.

Robert Häuser, whose signature appears on the note, was almost certainly the Bürgermeister at the time of issue — local Notgeld was typically authorized and signed by the sitting mayor.
