Obverse description The left half of the note carries a black line-engraved vignette of a Baroque fountain monument surmounted by a standing saint figure, set within an ornate cartouche frame. The right half is printed on a light blue guilloche underprint bearing the word 'Schlierbach' repeated in pale script, with the denomination '20' in large bold Gothic numerals at each corner and the inscription 'Zwanzig Heller' in decorative lettering across the top. The central text panel states the issuing authority, the resolution date of 18 April 1920, the validity period, an anti-counterfeiting warning, and the printed names of the Bürgermeister and two deputy officials.

A Notgeld issue from a small Upper Austrian village, printed during the acute coin shortage that followed the dissolution of the Habsburg monarchy. The new Austrian republic inherited an economy stripped of small-denomination metal coinage, and hundreds of municipalities — Schlierbach among them — printed their own emergency paper to fill the gap. Three local officials signed each note: the Bürgermeister and both deputy mayors, an unusually heavy endorsement for a 20 Heller piece that would have bought almost nothing.

Schlierbach's Cistercian monastery dominates the village; whether it played any role in financing or distributing the local Notgeld is unrecorded.
