20 Heller Scheibbs

Scheibbs is a small market town in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities it issued Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. The Radinger printing house — a local commercial printer — produced this note in-town, which was common for low-denomination Heller issues where no specialized security printer was needed or affordable.

The 1920 date places this firmly in the second wave of Austrian municipal Notgeld, by which point the practice had become almost self-sustaining — some towns issued notes long after the coin shortage eased, partly because collectors had begun buying them up on arrival.
