Two symmetrical vertical text tablets flanking the central vignette carry the issuing authority and validity inscriptions, while the denomination numeral '20' and the municipality name appear in bold hand-lettered script to the right. Sarmingstein is a tiny settlement in Upper Austria, pressed against the south bank of the Danube in the Strudengau gorge — one of the more isolated stretches of the river. This note is a piece of wartime Notgeld, issued by the local market commune when small-change coinage vanished from circulation during the First World War, hoarded by a public that no longer trusted paper and clung to metal. Thousands of Austrian municipalities did the same, but most relied on larger town printers; Sarmingstein went to J. M. Liebl in the nearby river town of Grein.
The Jaksc/Pick suffix "Ib" indicates a specific paper or print variant within the 20 Heller denomination — worth tracking against the "Ia" if building a complete run.
