Ruprechtshofen is a small Lower Austrian market town, and its 1920 Heller notes belong to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld produced during the postwar coinage shortage — by 1920, municipal and cooperative issuers across Austria numbered in the thousands. These small emergency issues were self-authorized under a general tolerance by the Austrian government, not formally licensed, which means denominations, designs, and even signatories varied entirely at local discretion. Aigenbauer and Hackner were almost certainly local officials rather than bank officers — Gemeinde-level notes from this period were typically countersigned by the Bürgermeister and a council member or cashier.
