One of hundreds of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues from the post-WWI economic collapse, when coin shortages were so severe that townships, businesses, and even private associations printed their own fractional emergency money. Riedau is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note was almost certainly printed locally in very small quantities — most pieces in this series saw genuine petty-cash circulation before being recalled or simply worn out.
Hans Schender's signature as authorizing official is the only administrative record most of these communities left on their notes. The Jaksch/Pick cataloguing of Austrian Notgeld runs to thousands of entries, and this is a minor one.
