Rehberg bei Krems an der Donau was a minor rural commune, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austria in 1920 — a period when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system and chronic coin shortages forced even the smallest villages to issue their own emergency scrip. Bernhard, a Viennese printer operating out of the sixth district, handled a considerable volume of these small-commune issues.
