Beschrijving voorzijde The upper portion of the note is occupied by a detailed letterpress vignette of the local parish church with its pointed steeple, set against a hatched sky, enclosed within a decorative border of interlocking geometric patterns. To the right, the denomination is expressed in two framed panels: the word 'Zwanzig' in Gothic script above and the numeral '20' in bold, with 'Heller' beneath in matching script. The lower section carries the issuer text 'Gutschein der Marktgemeinde Rastenfeld' in ornate blackletter, followed by the liability clause, validity date of 31 December 1920, and three manuscript signatures of municipal officials.

Opmerkingen

Rastenfeld is a small market town in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the acute small-change shortage that gripped Austria in the immediate postwar years. With the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system and the new Austrian republic struggling to establish stable currency infrastructure, hundreds of municipalities — many of them tiny — issued their own Notgeld to keep local commerce moving. These Gemeinde-issued notes were legal within their issuing community only, redeemable at the local administration.

The Jaksc catalog remains the primary reference for Austrian municipal Notgeld of this period, covering thousands of issuers that Pick's international listings touch only selectively.
