Rabensburg is a small market town in Lower Austria, just kilometers from the Slovak border, and its 1920 Heller notes belong to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued after the collapse of the Habsburg empire left the new republic's coinage supply in chaos. Municipal and commercial issuers across Austria printed their own small-denomination emergency scrip between roughly 1919 and 1921 to fill the gap left by hoarded or vanished metal coins.
Rabensburg's issue is among the more obscure village-level emissions — collector interest in Austrian Notgeld varies sharply by artistic ambition, and small market towns rarely commissioned the elaborate multi-color designs that drove the speculative Notgeld collecting boom of the same period.
