| Obverse description | Printed in purple-brown on cream paper by letterpress, the note carries a vignette of the Erbpostamt (hereditary post office) at lower left, with the denomination numeral '20' in sunburst cartouches at upper left and upper right, and the issuing authority 'Marktgemeinde Purkersdorf' across the top. The central text block, in German Gothic script, states the Notgeld redemption terms valid from 15 May to 30 May 1920. Below the text appear facsimile signatures of the Bürgermeister and two Vizebürgermeister, with a municipal seal at lower right. |

Austrian Notgeld of this period was produced because the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small denominations almost entirely absent from circulation — coins had been hoarded or melted, and the central authorities were too overwhelmed to fill the gap. Hundreds of Gemeinden across Austria issued their own emergency fractions between 1919 and 1922, Purkersdorf among them. Three signatures on a note of this size was not unusual for municipal issues; the Bürgermeister and both Vizebürgermeister signing jointly gave the scrip at least a nominal administrative legitimacy.
