Persenbeug is a small market town on the Danube in Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal Notgeld issued when the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small communities unable to source enough coin for daily transactions. The issuing authority here is the town government itself — not a bank, not a chamber of commerce — which is why the signatures are those of the Bürgermeister and Vizebürgermeister rather than any financial official.
Printed by E. Prietzel in Steyr, a firm that supplied Notgeld to numerous Upper and Lower Austrian municipalities during this period. Collector demand for Persenbeug issues has always been modest, keeping prices grounded.
