Austrian municipal notgeld of this type was a direct consequence of the severe coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. By 1920, small-denomination metal coinage had effectively vanished from everyday commerce, and hundreds of Austrian municipalities printed their own emergency paper to cover the gap. Obertrum am See, a small market town in Salzburg province, was one of thousands of communities that did so — which is precisely what makes this note unremarkable as a rarity but genuinely interesting as local economic history.
Most Salzburg-region notgeld of this period was printed in very small runs, redeemed quickly once coin supply stabilized, and rarely survived in quantity.
