Austrian Notgeld of this type occupies a peculiar administrative niche: issued not by a municipality or savings institution but by a private racing club, the Rennverein Obernberg am Inn, during the severe small-coin shortage that followed Austria's postwar economic collapse. Clubs, associations, and commercial enterprises issued their own emergency fractions throughout 1920 precisely because the state could not supply adequate low-denomination coinage — a situation that had been worsening since 1916.
Printed by Buchdruckerei Schmitrer in Schwanenstadt rather than locally, the note reflects how small printers across Upper Austria absorbed an enormous volume of Notgeld commissions in a compressed period. Roithinger's design credit is unusually specific for a provincial piece at this denomination.
