Niedertalheim is a small village in Upper Austria, and this note is one of hundreds of Austrian municipal emergency issues — Notgeld — produced between 1919 and 1921 to address the acute coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The commune itself authorized and signed the issue, with Alois Schick's signature carrying whatever local administrative authority the village could muster at the time.
