Neumarkt im Mühlkreis is a market town in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller notgeld dates from the chaotic post-war period when the newly formed Republic of German-Austria — and then Austria proper — faced a severe coin shortage. Municipal and communal bodies across the country filled the gap by issuing their own small-denomination emergency paper, legally tolerated rather than formally sanctioned by Vienna.
The Mühlkreis district notes were generally short-lived in circulation, intended for recall once central coinage supplies recovered.
