One of thousands of Austrian municipal notgeld issues that flooded local economies after the First World War, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small communities without adequate coinage for everyday transactions. Mondsee, a small market town on the Salzkammergut lake of the same name, issued these notes through its local authority — the Marktgemeinde — as a purely practical stopgap. The designer Reisenbichler is otherwise unattested in major notgeld literature, likely a local draughtsman rather than a professional printer's artist.
Bürgermeister A. Kaltenbrünner's signature serves as the sole guarantee of redemption, which was the legal and financial reality behind all such issues: the issuing municipality's creditworthiness, not any central backing.
