Mitter-Arnsdorf is a small locality in Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the postwar Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1922. With the old Habsburg monetary system in collapse and small coins essentially vanishing from circulation, thousands of communes issued their own emergency paper — the central authorities in Vienna lacked both the metal and the organizational capacity to fill the gap quickly enough.
Eduard Sieger was a Vienna-based printer who handled a considerable volume of this municipal Notgeld work. His output was functional rather than ambitious.
