Mautern an der Donau, a small town in Lower Austria, issued these Heller notes during the Notgeld period — the wave of emergency municipal coinage and paper that swept Austria and Germany after the First World War left central authorities unable to supply adequate small change. By 1920, the worst of the shortage was already passing; issues this late tend to reflect local administrative inertia as much as genuine necessity.
The Jaksch reference places this firmly in the documented Austrian Notgeld corpus, though Mautern issues are not among the more widely collected in the series.
