Mauerkirchen is a small market town in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities, it issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the chaotic post-WWI period when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. These locally printed scrip pieces filled a genuine transactional gap, not a collector market, though the collector market came quickly enough once issuers realized the secondary demand.
The 1920 date places this firmly in the second wave of Austrian Notgeld, after the initial wartime issues and before the hyperinflation that rendered the entire exercise moot within a few years.
