Maria Schmolln is a small pilgrimage village in Upper Austria, and its 1920 Heller notes belong to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued after the collapse of the Habsburg currency system left municipal authorities scrambling to provide small-denomination exchange. Thousands of Gemeinden printed their own emergency issues between roughly 1919 and 1921, but the sheer volume of surviving examples means condition and local interest drive value more than rarity alone.
Bürgermeister F. Forsterpointner's signature authenticates this as an official municipal instrument rather than a private scrip — a distinction that mattered legally at the time of issue.
