Maria Lanzendorf is a small parish south of Vienna, and its decision to issue notgeld in 1920 reflects how far Austria's post-war monetary disintegration had penetrated — not just into provincial towns but into villages of a few hundred residents. The printing house Jackob & Neuhold operated out of Vienna's sixth district and handled a considerable volume of lower Austrian municipal notgeld during this period, making them a reliable if unremarkable choice for a commune with modest means.
Three signatories — the mayor, vice-mayor, and a council member — was unusually thorough authentication for a 20 Heller piece.
