Maria Laach am Jauerling is a small wine-growing commune in Lower Austria's Wachau region, and this 20 Heller Notgeld was issued in 1920 as part of the wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Austria following the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Towns and villages printed their own small-denomination notes because coin shortages made everyday commerce nearly impossible — the central authorities could not produce enough low-value metal currency fast enough.
