Marchtrenk is a small market town in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the near-total disappearance of low-denomination coinage in the aftermath of the First World War and the collapse of the Habsburg economy. The Gemeinde, not a bank, was the issuing authority, with Dr. Josef Holzhey signing in his capacity as a local official rather than any monetary institution.
