Marbach an der Donau is a small Lower Austrian market town, and like hundreds of similarly modest municipalities it issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — in the aftermath of the First World War when coin simply disappeared from circulation. The 20 Heller denomination targets everyday small transactions: tram fares, bread, a newspaper. Jakob Philipp in Vienna was a commercial printer who handled a large volume of Austrian municipal Notgeld contracts during this period, producing notes that varied considerably in artistic ambition depending on what the issuing community was willing to spend.
The Heller itself was abolished in 1925 when Austria redenominated, rendering all such notes immediately obsolete.
