Leopoldschlag is a small municipality in Upper Austria, near the Bohemian border, and this 20 Heller notgeld was issued during the acute small-change famine that paralyzed everyday commerce across German-speaking Austria after the First World War. With coins hoarded or simply absent from circulation, hundreds of municipalities issued their own emergency paper in fractional denominations — Leopoldschlag among them.
Signed by Bürgermeister Josef Hölzl, whose signature gave the note its local legal standing under the informal municipal guarantee backing most Austrian notgeld of this period.
