One of hundreds of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues produced in the early 1920s, this 20 Heller piece from Lausa bei Losenstein — a tiny rural community in Upper Austria near the Enns valley — was printed by Emil Prietzel of Steyr, a local commercial printer who handled numerous small-run emergency issues for surrounding parishes and municipalities during the post-war currency breakdown.
The Heller denomination itself was already being phased out; Austria abolished it in 1925 when the Schilling replaced the Krone. Notes like this one circulated in an economy where coins had vanished from daily trade due to metal hoarding and wartime disruption.
