Austrian Notgeld of this period requires some precision about what it actually was: emergency small-change scrip issued by municipalities after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire left ordinary commerce starved of metal coinage. Langenstein, a small Upper Austrian village, was among hundreds of communities that printed their own fractional notes between 1919 and 1921 to cover the gap.
