Lambrechten is a small village in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of coin shortages that persisted long after the armistice. The central government could not supply enough small change, so thousands of local authorities printed their own. Lambrechten was among the smallest to do so.
Signed by Alois Großbötzl, almost certainly the Bürgermeister at the time. These village-level issues typically had very short circulation windows before being redeemed and destroyed, making intact survivors more common in collector portfolios than in any documented circulation record.
