| Beschrijving voorzijde | Cream-toned notgeld printed in brown and green, with a decorative ruled border. At the top, a bold Gothic-script title reads 'Gutschein der Gemeinde Krummnussbaum', flanked in each upper corner by a green sprig vignette. A central landscape vignette presents a letterpress view of the municipality's industrial and civic buildings. The denomination '20' appears in large brown numerals at lower left and right, each overlaid with the word 'Heller', while flanking columns of Gothic text record the municipality's guarantee of liability and the redemption period. Below the central vignette, printed signature lines identify the Vizebürgermeister and the Bürgermeister, with manuscript signatures. |

Krummnussbaum is a small market town on the Danube in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities in the immediate postwar period, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. The chronic coin shortage that plagued Austria-Hungary in wartime never resolved itself; it only worsened as the empire collapsed and the new Republic inherited an economy in freefall.
The Jaksch catalog reference places this firmly in the well-documented Lower Austrian municipal Notgeld series. 1920 issues from villages this size were typically printed in very small runs and redeemed quickly at face value, which paradoxically makes surviving examples harder to locate than the more elaborately produced collector-targeted Notgeld that came later.
