Krieglach is a small market town in the Mürztal valley of Styria, and this 20 Heller Notgeld emerged from the severe coin shortage that gripped Austria in the immediate postwar years. The Austro-Hungarian monetary system had collapsed with the empire itself, and thousands of Austrian municipalities — including the smallest Styrian villages — were left to fill the vacuum with their own printed scrip. Krieglach issued its Notgeld locally, as the "b" variant designation in the Jaksch reference suggests minor typographic or paper differences from the primary issue.
Peter Rosegger, the Styrian poet and novelist born near Krieglach in 1843, is closely associated with the town.
