One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced in the early 1920s, when chronic coin shortages forced municipalities across the former empire to print their own small-denomination emergency money. Kirchberg am Wagram, a market town in Lower Austria, commissioned designer Curt Sauer for its series — a deliberate choice, since many comparable communes simply recycled generic designs or farmed the work to local printers without artistic direction.
Sauer contributed to numerous Notgeld commissions during this period, and his involvement here places the Kirchberg issue within the better-documented artistic tier of Austrian municipal Notgeld rather than the purely utilitarian end of the spectrum.
