One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced in the chaotic postwar years when the collapsed Habsburg monetary system left municipalities scrambling to cover small-denomination shortages. Kirchberg am Wagram, a small market town in Lower Austria's Wagram wine region, commissioned its own series rather than wait for Vienna to stabilize the currency supply. Curt Sauer, who designed several local Notgeld series during this period, handled the artwork.
The Jaksch/Pick suffix "IIa" indicates a recognized variety within the series — likely a paper stock or printing distinction, though the specific differentiator for this sub-type is not well documented in standard references.
