Obverse description Pink paper Notgeld with a repetitive letterpress underprint of 'Stadtgemeinde Innsbruck' across the entire field, serving as a rudimentary security background. At centre, a Gothic-script heading above a red municipal shield vignette flanked by decorative cross ornaments gives way to the large denomination numeral '20' and 'Heller' in bold blackletter type. The issue date 'Innsbruck, 1. Dez. 1918' and the facsimile signature of Bürgermeister Wilhelm Greil appear at the foot, while the validity clause 'Nur gültig bis 31. Mai 1919' is printed vertically along the right margin.

Comments

Innsbruck's wartime Heller notes belong to the vast wave of Austrian municipal Notgeld issued after the Austro-Hungarian monetary system buckled under the strain of the First World War. The Stadtgemeinde issued these small denominations to address a practical, immediate problem: the hoarding and disappearance of metal coinage from everyday commerce.

Wilhelm Greil, who signed this note, served as Bürgermeister of Innsbruck during this period — his tenure running directly through the collapse of the Habsburg administration in late 1918.
