Hochfilzen is a small village in the Pillersee valley — today better known for its biathlon World Cup venue than for its monetary history. This 20 Heller note was issued by the municipality in 1919 as an Austrian Notgeld, part of the enormous wave of local emergency scrip that flooded the former imperial territories when the collapse of the Habsburg state left a severe shortage of small-denomination coinage. Wagner in Innsbruck printed for dozens of Tyrolean communities during this period, making their output collectively significant even if individual printings were modest.
Hochfilzen's total population at the time was barely in the hundreds. The actual number of notes issued was almost certainly small, which now works in the collector's favor.
