Gunskirchen is a small Upper Austrian municipality best known today — grimly — for the satellite camp of Mauthausen that operated on its outskirts in the final weeks of the war. This Heller note predates that by twenty-five years, issued during the Notgeld wave that followed Austria's post-WWI economic collapse, when municipalities across the country were forced to produce their own small-denomination scrip simply to keep local commerce functional.

The printed date of 30 April 1945 in the catalog data almost certainly refers to a later archival or collector annotation, not the note's issue date — 1920 is the correct period for this series.
