Göttweig Abbey, a Benedictine monastery perched above the Danube in Lower Austria, was among the many Austrian ecclesiastical and civic institutions that resorted to issuing their own Notgeld during the economic dislocation that followed the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. The Kellerstube — the abbey's wine cellar tavern — was the specific issuing body here, which is unusual even by Notgeld standards: not a municipality, not a savings bank, but a monastic hospitality operation covering its own small change shortage.

Buchdruckerei Herzogenburg, a local print shop in the nearby town of the same name, handled production for several Lower Austrian Notgeld issues in this period.
